Paul Watson, fondateur de la Sea Sheperd, arrêté à Francfort le 13 mai / Paul Watson under arrest

Le fondateur de l’organisation écologiste Sea Sheperd, Paul Watson, de nationalité canadienne, a été arrêté dimanche à l’aéroport de Francfort. Il était aujourd’hui encore maintenu en détention (lundi 14 mai), le temps d’examiner les accusations portées contre lui, a-t-on appris auprès de son avocat à la sortie du tribunal.

Le parquet de Francfort a indiqué que cette arrestation a eu lieu en raison d’un mandat d’arrêt du Costa Rica portant sur des faits de 2002, lors d’une campagne de Sea Sheperd contre la pêche aux requins.

« Mon client est consterné », a déclaré l’avocat de M. Watson, Oliver Wallasch. Il doit rester en prison à Francfort jusqu’à ce que la demande d’extradition du Costa Rica, qui veut le juger, soit examinée, « mais on ne sait combien de temps cela va prendre », a-t-il ajouté.

M. Watson était en transit à Francfort et prévoyait initialement de se rendre en France, puis revenir en Allemagne, pour y tenir des conférences, a expliqué Olav Jost, un membre allemand de Sea Sheperd qui lui a tenu compagnie dans les premières heures de son arrestation à l’aéroport.

Basée aux Etats-Unis, réputée pour ses coups de force, Sea Sheperd est une organisation non gouvernementale consacrée à la protection des océans. Elle a été fondée en 1977.

Prosecutors in Frankfurt said the arrest took place because of an arrest warrant from Costa Rica on the facts of 2002, during a Sea Shepherd campaign against shark fishing.
« My client is appalled, » said Mr. Watson’s lawyer, Oliver Wallasch. He must remain in prison in Frankfurt until the request for extradition from Costa Rica, that wants to judge him, will to be considered, « but it is unclear how long it will take, » he added.

Mr. Watson was in transit in Frankfurt and originally planned to travel to France, then back  to Germany, to hold conferences, said Olav Jost, a German member of Sea Shepherd, who stayed wih him in the early hours of his arrest at the airport.

Based in the United States, Sea Shepherd, founded in 1977, is a non-governmental organization dedicated to the protecion of the oceans.
